Portmanteau – two meanings packed up into one word<\/p>\n
In English the word \u2018portmanteau\u2019 originally referred to a type of suitcase that opens into two halves with a hinge in the middle. While this type of suitcase has mostly fallen out of fashion with the popularization of rolling suitcases and modern backpacks, the word portmanteau lives on in the English language as a term for words created from a fusion of two or more existing words and their meanings. (Incidentally, although the word \u2018portmanteau\u2019 is a loanword from French, the French equivalent for this linguistic term is \u2018mot-valise\u2019, literally meaning \u2018suitcase-word\u2019.)<\/p>\n
The use of the word portmanteau to refer to these kinds of words started with Lewis Carrol\u2019s Through the Looking Glass, where the character Humpty Dumpty explains the made-up word \u2018slithy\u2019 (a combination of \u2018lithe\u2019 and \u2018slimy\u2019) as \u201clike a portmanteau \u2013 there are two meanings packed up into one word\u201d.<\/p>\n

There are other types of words that are a combination of two or more words, such as compound words and syllabic abbreviations. What differentiates a portmanteau from a compound word such as \u2018seatbelt\u2019 is that while a compound word can be broken back up into separate usable words (\u2018seat\u2019 and \u2018belt\u2019 in this case), this is not possible with a portmanteau since it does not contain all its constituent words in full. For example, breaking up the word \u2018brunch\u2019 into \u2018br\u2019 and \u2018unch\u2019 (or in any other way) does not result in any proper words at all, and although the word \u2018play\u2019 in \u2018cosplay\u2019 is a word on its own, \u2018cos\u2019 is not. (According to some definitions, a true portmanteau word cannot contain any of the full words it is made up of, but \u2018cosplay\u2019 is nonetheless frequently mentioned among portmanteau words so it would appear not everyone agrees with this definition).<\/p>\n
Syllabic abbreviations on the other hand, are usually defined as abbreviations formed from the initial syllables of multiple words, such as in \u2018Interpol\u2019 (International + police).<\/p>\n
The word \u2018portmanteau\u2019 itself is a combination of the two words \u2018port\u2019 (carry) and \u2018manteau\u2019 (coat), but since its constituent words are both included in full is not a portmanteau word, but rather a compound word.<\/p>\n
